Ad litteras Tuas, Vir Celeberrime, anno superiori ad me datas[1] tardius respondeo, quoniam hactenus impeditus fui, ne desiderio Tuo satisfacere potuerim in recensenda Dissertatione Tua de legibus motus.[2] Etsi enim obiter eam perlegerim, haud quaquam tamen singula satis expendere licuit, propterea quod totus per hanc hiemem fuerim in edendo Tomo primo Operum philosophicorum,[3] qui discursum praeliminarem et Logicam complexus quinquies fere alpha[be]tum adimplet ac ne nunc quidem typis integer descriptus prostat, ut Tibi exemplar mittere liceret. Quoniam tamen hunc laborem feliciter, nec, ut spero, inutiliter superavi, mihi tandem redditus ad lectionem Dissertationis Tuae a[c]cedo et totus in ea ero, donec integram ad trutinam appenderim, atque in compendium miserim Actis Eruditorum proxime inserendum,[4] quibus etiam postea inserendae erunt recensiones illarum quae praemio condecoratae fuerunt.[5] In Transactionibus Anglicanis, quas his diebus accepi, vidi impugnari demonstrationem Tuam de viribus vivis;[6] quam elementis meis Matheseos inserui,[7] etsi suppresso nomine Tuo. Non miror, Gallos Tibi praemium non decrevisse, cum ratio status minime permisisset, etiamsi ad rationes Tuas nihil reponere potuissent. Puto tamen ipsos non malitiose Tecum egisse; File icon.gif sed revera adhuc persuasos esse, penes se stare veritatem, cum in principiis utique Angli et Galli a nobis dissentiant aliam prorsus notionem virium sibi formantes quam Leibnitius, cum qua mensura Leibnitiana minime consistit. Sed de his proxime scribam apertius, ubi dissertationem Tuam curate perlegero: videntur enim mihi adhuc superesse dubia quaedam quae obstant, quo minus Angli et Galli consentire queant. Transactionibus Anglicanis multa hactenus a variis contra vires vivas prolata sunt et inprimis calamus stringitur adversus Cl. Polenum, cui describi curavi, quae ad ipsum spectant.[8] Videbimus, quid ad ea sit repositurus.

Ego controversiam prorsus missam feci;[9] philosophiae tamen potius excolendae, quam Mathesi incumbo, propterea quod huic plures utiliter vacent, quam isti, utut illa non minorem generi humano, immo majorem spondeat utilitatem quam Mathesis. Puto ubi primum operum Latinorum volumen, quod, quamprimum sese obtulerit occasio, Tibi mittam, videris, Tibi institutum meum probatum iri. Etenim Mathematicorum more ad notiones fixas et determinatas reduco, quae confusis implicantur et vagis ancipitia redduntur. Et spero fore aliquando, si hac via philosophari pergant alii, ut non minus certo tramite ad nova continuo progredi detur File icon.gif in philosophia, quam nunc in Mathesi licet. Immo confido, me et Mathematicis novos campos aperturum, in quos utiliter exspatiaturi sunt, et Mathematum utilitatem aliis quoque persuasurum, qui exiguum eidem pretium statuunt, si a practica Mathesi discesseris.
